Privacy Policy

Art Overlay is a tracing tool that runs in your browser. It has no accounts and no sign-in, and it is built so that your camera and your images never leave your device. This page lists everything that does leave it, and why.
Who is responsible
Art Overlay is made and run by Jorge Romero, an individual developer based in Mexico. For any question about this policy or your data, write to hola@artoverlay.com.
What stays on your device
The camera stream, the reference image you upload, and everything the tracer and the background remover do with them are processed in your browser. None of it is sent to us or to anyone else.
The first time you use the background remover, your browser downloads the model file it needs from the servers of IMG.LY, the maker of that library. The request fetches the model; your image is not part of it.
The tracer keeps one note in your browser’s session storage, to remember that you dismissed a message. It holds no identifier and is erased when you close the tab. Art Overlay sets no cookies.
What you choose to send us
Sharing a drawing is optional. If you do, we receive the photo of your drawing, the reference image if you include it, the name you want credited if you give one, whether you allow it in the gallery, and the page language, surface type and kind of device you used.
Sending an idea through the suggestions form is optional too. We receive your message, your email address if you leave one, and the page language and kind of device.
Both arrive as an email in our inbox and are not stored in any database. A drawing is published in the gallery only if you gave permission when you sent it.
Analytics without cookies
We use PostHog to count visits and to see whether the tool works. It runs in cookieless mode: it writes nothing to your browser and builds no profile of you. To tell one visit from another, PostHog’s servers compute a hash from your IP address and browser details with a salt that changes every day, so a visitor cannot be recognised from one day to the next. The IP address itself is not stored.
The events record the pages viewed, which controls of the tool were used, the kind of device, what you type into the image search box, your country (a two-letter code worked out by our host, never your IP address), and error reports with technical context such as the window size and the state of the tracer. They never include your images or your camera feed.
Server logs and spam protection
The site is hosted on Vercel, which, like any web host, processes your IP address and browser details to deliver the pages and keeps short-lived request logs. The two forms also hold your IP address in memory for up to an hour, only to limit how many times they can be submitted.
Who receives data
Three service providers process data on our behalf: Vercel (hosting), PostHog (analytics, on servers in the United States) and SendPulse (delivery of the emails from the two forms). We do not sell data, we show no ads, and we share nothing with advertisers or data brokers.
Links that take you elsewhere, such as Instagram or Buy Me a Coffee, are governed by the policies of those sites.
How long it is kept
Shared drawings and ideas stay in our inbox until we delete them, or until you ask us to. Analytics events carry no identifier, so they cannot be traced back to you or deleted one by one; they are kept only as long as they are useful for understanding how the tool is used. Host logs expire on the host’s own schedule.
Your choices
You can use everything in Art Overlay without sending us anything. To have a shared drawing, an idea or a gallery entry deleted, or to ask what we hold from you, write to hola@artoverlay.com and we will take care of it. A content blocker that stops PostHog does not affect the tool. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to access, correct or erase your data and to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Art Overlay is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children under 13. It asks for no personal information to work.
The Art Overlay plugin for AI assistants
The Art Overlay plugin for ChatGPT and similar assistants is a set of written instructions that helps the assistant prepare a reference image and explain how to trace it. It has no server of ours behind it: it sends us nothing from your conversation and gives the assistant no access to your camera or files. Your conversation, and any image the assistant creates, are handled by the assistant’s provider under its own privacy policy. If you then open artoverlay.com, this policy applies.
Changes
If what the site collects changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves.
